SAFETY 3: Accident Prevention Night

For the Safety Trefoil 3 (which you need for your Service Focus of your Queens Guide) you need to “organise and facilitate a program for a unit covering various aspects of accident prevention.  The program should include games, skills and activities and may be used in a Unit or group other than your own.”

Eilish wrote this about her Accident Prevention Night with a local junior guide unit….

On Wednesday 25 February 2015 I ran an Accident Prevention night for San Souci Junior Guides.

Activities that were included were based on different types of safety such as;

  • Home Safety – “Spot the difference” for which kitchen is most dangerous
  • Road Safety – Road Safety actions (similar to Captains Coming)
  • Fire Safety – STOP DROP AND ROLL practise
  • Water Safety – Girls created water safety posters that had tips and safety rules.

Skills used when running the night were;

  • Ask questions to see what the girls did know
  • Create simple activities that suited the age group and did not require too much explanation and assistance
  • Always set time limits when planning so you don’t go over time.
  • Make sure to do physical activities to keep them interested

The girls enjoyed all activities especially STOP, DROP and ROLL as well as Captains Coming because they were able to be active after talking and practise the relevant skills.  Some also enjoyed making water safety posters.

They told me that they were reminded of some very important safety rules and tips and learnt new ones such as not to read a book, play on a phone or keep your head down while crossing or near a road.

Please remember these are just some ideas… it doesn’t mean you have to do your Queens Guide like this.  What is a challenge to one girl is not necessarily a challenge to another girl!
